Dr. Golenbock
I have always wanted to be a pediatrician. I joked that I knew my calling by age 6, when my mother told me I was going to be a doctor. But the truth is that I never wavered. In 1972 at the age of 23 I was a pediatric intern at Mt. Sinai Hospital after graduating from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I stayed at Mt. Sinai for two years. Then I was asked to be Chief Resident in Pediatrics at Kings County in Brooklyn. After doing research and private practice in NYC for two years I found myself in a small office in Bethel in 1977. Dr. Magner joined me a few years later and then Dr. Machado. Eventually we all became Center for Pediatric Medicine. More than fifty years later I can say I loved being a pediatrician. I still miss having talks with children and their parents.
But I am enjoying retirement. Now my world centers around singing (Check out madhatterchorus.org), travelling, skiing, and trying to get more exercise. I get my wood in large pieces and split it by hand until I can stack it. I continue to read medical journals and keep up with what's new. I write a monthly article for CPM that's featured in Tribuna, a local trilingual newspaper. And after a hiatus because of the pandemic, I joined Hand Help (handhelp.org) once again this year in Peru to provide expert hand surgery at no cost to local children.
I am still thrilled when I see someone who remembers taking their children to me when they were little! I am grateful that I had such wonderful opportunities for so long!
